Celebrating a small victory of democracy today

I was on my way from work yesterday when I saw the news and was rendered speechless.  Protestors had entered halls of congress and attempted to disrupt the sessions of the House and the Senate. Behind the locked doors, guns were drawn as the lawmakers and leaders hid behind seats in fear.

It was a sad and shocking day for America. As the events unfolded, the world reacted. Some were in shock while others condemned. Twitter and Facebook suspended Trump’s social media accounts.

And while it was hard to believe that  such actions could happen on the soil of the free land, the actions of the leaders after the attack spoke volumes of their courage, will and determination to uphold America’s constitutions and the laws that govern the land.

As the lawmakers reconvened later that evening, there were some great messages that was said inside the chambers. There were messages of condemnation of violent acts of certain groups and leaders to heartful prayers and a calling for unity as a nation.

“To those who wreaked havoc in our Capitol today, you did not win. Violence never wins. Freedom wins. And this is still the People’s House.” Mike Pence, Vice President of the United States.

Another senator reads a quote by Ronald Regan.

“Peace is not the absence of conflict, it is the ability to handle conflict by peaceful means.”

Despite being shaken, the lawmakers made sure that the electoral votes were counted, and President Elected Biden was certified. Today, we celebrate a victory against those seeking to undermine America’s democracy.

We still have a long way to go in terms of peace and justice in America.  And while the road is clear for President Biden to be inaugurated on the 20th of this month, America may have more questions than answers.
