There is often a lot of talk in media about increasing infections, death and fear. I don’t want to diminish the fact that COVID 19 is real but having been back to work on campus and seeing others, has helped me feel safe, connected and sane.
Safe because we were all doing everything we can to minimise the spread. Disinfecting, social distancing and masks wearing.
Connected because we got an opportunity to see each other faces (well half of it anyway). Online video chats have been amazing to keep us connected but nothing beats being in presence of a person.
Sane because through our connections, we were able to share our stories, listen and reflect on the craziness of COVID19.
Another joy was having the ability to do other things that didn’t involve screen time. Like preparing for the lab space to accommodate others and ensuring that everyone follows the safety protocol.
I have enjoyed the spontaneous ideas and collaborations that often occur during breaks or at the water refills station. It doesn’t happen as often but at least it is happening again :).
Most importantly, it is having an opportunity check in one another and see how each of us are doing. Something we needed much more than we realized.
It is definitely a different world but I have enjoyed coming back to the space and seeing others. Yes, the fear of getting infected again remains in the back of my mind. But we are doing the best we can.
It could be worse, we could be at forefront of the COvId 19 battles, like what our doctors, nurses and essential works face day in and day out.
And I think that it also helps to remember that life is unpredictable. If it’s not COVID 19, it maybe something else. A car accident, a health issue or fighting just to bring food to the table because you lost your job.
Despite the fear, I have found joy. What has it been like for you?
Are you back on campus or doing face to face work?
How do you feel about going back to seeing others?
And what do you miss most during COVID 19?
